Changes is Good…Right?

  • by

As you can see, I updated the ol’ website over the weekend. It’s always been a bit orange, but now I’m full vested in the Very Orange look, which is big in certain French circles this year. Does it work? I’m not sure. It’s a bit more muted than the Classic 1970s Furniture theme, closer to My First Dreamsicle, but still… that’s a lot of orange.

Oh, and the font’s bigger, which I like. And the tags are working, complete with the lovely tag cloud on the right. And I like the list of recent posts. It helps add context. And I finally got the search bar on the top hooked up.

But do you like it? Does it burn your eyes like bleach? Does it give you a warm feeling to gaze upon its orange beauty, like unto holding a kitten on your lap? Comments are working now. Go ahead and let me know.

  1. Hi Darrell,

The form seems to be working properly, and I do like the addition of the tags. The color is not too bright, which is good, but I may suggest changing the color of the gray (as shown in the copyright info on the bottom) to another color as it gets lost on the page.

    Regards,

    Sean

  2. Hey Sean! Thanks for stopping by!

Oh yeah. You’re totally right about the gray text. Maybe I can make it blue or purple that compliments the orange without being confused with the basic black.

  3. This is my comment, there are many comments like it but this one is mine!

Well now that’s out of my system in Firefox 3.6.3 on my mac none of the fields are visible to me till I click on them and I spent a while clicking around on the right side of the text before I realised they where on the left. Perhaps darken the boxes around the fields cause now that I know there there I can just make them out if I tilt my screen to a fairly extreme angle.

    Otherwise looks mine to me.

P.S. you took my creamsicle joke you jerk.

  4. This is the most shameless ploy to get emails and comments I have ever seen!

I like the site, the peachy color is nice and neutral. The designated hitter logo is cool.

You can’t see the boxes on the comment fields until you click on them, and that bothers me. Lots of things bother me, so maybe that’s okay. It appears that I figured out how it works.

  5. You should also change the posting time. I got up early, but KNOW I didn’t post anything on this site at 4:28 am. My watch says it’s about 3 hours later. 😉

    Regards,

    Sean

P.S. Chuck is right. Good way to generate traffic. 😛

  6. Yep, all the text entry fields are too hard to see. The navigation bar could be made to stand out a bit more too, maybe a subtle peach background — doesn’t need to scream “HEY I’M A NAV BAR!”, just a little “psst, I’m different from the rest of the page”. The comment dates are in Obfuscation Gray too. Is the Post Comment button supposed to have a button-like border? Seems like it should, but I’m not seeing it.

  7. I’m on my iPhone, all fields showed for me. I agree with the gray for time date stamp needs to go. That’s all I got as I’m no website guru.

  8. I hate everything Chuck likes and vice versa.

Just kidding, I don’t like that the boxes for replies only show up when you click on them easier.

It’s like attacking an invisible creature in a 4e game. “Dude, I just saw you take the fig off the map, I know its in that square.”

Pffft. Blogs are so two-thousand and zeros. You should leverage the web 2.0 cloud to evangelize the long tail. I read that in Fortune. The paper version.

  9. I also don’t like that I can’t find out to edit a post to fix a stupid typo. *easier

    Stupid, stupid typo.

  10. Hmm… the orange of the site design doesn’t bother me, but when I try to highlight something, that orange does burn my eyes. Also, the boxes for this comment form are basically invisible until you click on them.

I’d recommend increasing the font size of the top navigation — ideally it would sit in a bar rather than just floating there, and probably saving the header image as a higher resolution jpg would be nice. And… why are there no categories?

  11. Thanks for all the feedback, folks!

As you can see, I’ve changed the illegible gray text to a soothing deep purple, added border lines to help anchor the side bar and top menus, and made the comment box visible – orange, and visible.

Thanks again for your help. Together, we’re making the web a little less ugly, one WordPress website at a time.
