Accepting Success

  • by

Remember when I promised to finish one game a month? Okay, I promised to try to finish a game a month? And then I failed? Well, it’s the end of another month, and I’m pleasantly surprised to announce that I have, in fact, succeeded in finishing a very small video game.

Oh, it’s not very polished. It’s not, in fact, very good. But you can win. You can lose (when you lose you start over). And there’s enough thought involved in winning / not losing that I won’t be asked to hand in my game-designer card.

I should mention that this imperfect beast is not a showcase for my game-writing and world-building skills. (It’s barely a demonstration of my game design skills.) It does show my game-writing philosophy, however: gameplay comes first. Story and world are awesome, but if they don’t support the gameplay, you’re doing it wrong.

So what is it? It’s SPAWNER SQUASH, a top-down shooter in which you try to shut down the monster-spawners before you’re swarmed and destroyed by monsters. To move, use the W,A,S, and D keys. To aim and shoot, use the mouse. Touch a spawner to shut it down, and don’t let the monsters touch you or you’ll die and have to start over.

I’ll eventually figure out how to imbed Flash games into the blog, but for now, you can download (or open in your browser) the game from here.
