Turbo Violence

As a geek of a certain age, I have a radioactive warm spot in my heart for the post-apocalyptic movies of the 1980s. Over the weekend, a new movie wormed its way into that spot like a mutant Canadian wood tick, and I’d like to recommend it to you.*

Turbo Kid came out last year, but looks like it was made in 1983 for about $79 — $42 of which they spent on fake-looking gore effects. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic future of 1997 that’s like Mad Max, but instead of Australians in muscle cars, it features Canadians on BMX bicycles.

Oh, and Michael Ironside in an eye patch.

Turbo Kid is a silly, nostalgic romp that earnestly clings to the tropes of the outdated genre while somehow refusing to take itself too seriously. It’s good fun for Game Masters looking for inspiration, or anyone who wants to relive the glory days of low-budget ultra-violence on VHS.

* As long as you’re okay with R-rated levels of gore and swearing. Despite the title, the movie is in no way suitable for kids.
