Counter Play

  • by

I was prepared for the worst.

The colonist counters in Doomed Colony are the worst types of thing to prototype: they have game information on one side, a color-coded common back on the other, and have to be small enough to fit on the board.

I was prepared to make them from scratch. This which would involve cutting square counters from old cereal boxes (I always have several on hand for just such an occasion) and using markers or colored paper to color-code their backs. It wouldn’t be hard, per se, but would definitely be tedious.

Luckily, I found a batch of color-coded chits in my Closet of Prototype Bits. (A big No Prize to the reader who can identify what game they’re originally from.) Now all I had to do was label the back sides of the chits as Workers, Executives, Aliens, or one of other colonists.

…And now I’ve done that. Double-checking my component list, I see I still need to make the boards. That should be quick and easy, since I already have those files laid out, so I won’t live-blog the process of re-sizing them and pressing “print.” (Just watch: Monday’s blog post will be “How it all went wrong and why I need a new place to live.”)
